Kidepo Valley National Park
Kidepo Valley National Park covers about 1,442 square kilometres of rugged savannah, rocky outcrops and mountain ranges in Uganda’s far north-east, on the borders of South Sudan and Kenya. It is the country’s most remote park and its most dramatic.
The Narus and Kidepo valleys stretch out beneath Mount Morungole and the hills along the border. With only a handful of vehicles on game drives at any time, Kidepo feels like the Africa of old: wide, quiet and untouched.
The park’s isolation has preserved wildlife found nowhere else in Uganda. Kidepo is the only Ugandan park where cheetah are regularly seen. It is also home to species typical of the dry north, including ostrich, greater and lesser kudu, bat-eared fox, caracal, striped hyena and Chandler’s mountain reedbuck. Large herds of buffalo, elephant, Rothschild’s giraffe, zebra and eland gather in the Narus Valley, where permanent water draws lion and leopard.
Birders can expect more than 470 species, including many dry-country birds not recorded elsewhere in the country. Game drives are the main activity, but guided walks, a visit to the Kanangorok hot springs near the South Sudan border, and cultural encounters with the Karamojong and the mountain-dwelling Ik people make Kidepo a rich and rewarding destination.
Reaching the park takes commitment. The drive from Kampala covers about 700 kilometres and takes 10 to 12 hours, often split with a stop at Murchison Falls or Sipi Falls. A scheduled or charter flight to Apoka airstrip takes about two hours. Three nights is the minimum to make the journey worthwhile. Kidepo best suits experienced safari travellers, photographers and anyone looking for genuine wilderness and solitude, far from the busier circuits of southern Uganda.
Where is Kidepo Valley National Park?

Giraffes in Kidepo Valley National Park
Kidepo Valley National Park lies in the Karamoja region of northeastern Uganda, close to the borders with South Sudan and Kenya. Covering about 1,442 square kilometres, it is a long road journey from Kampala, often ten to twelve hours or more. Flights may be available depending on the season and operator, making advance travel planning especially important.
What to see
Narus Valley
Seasonal water sources in Narus Valley attract wildlife and make this one of the park’s most productive game-viewing areas.
Buffalo and predators
Large buffalo herds are a signature sight, and the park supports lions, elephants and other savannah animals. Cheetahs occur in the wider landscape but are rarely seen.
Kidepo Valley scenery
Dry riverbeds, distant mountains and open plains create striking photographic compositions, particularly in early and late light.
Experiences worth making time for
Game drives
Spend time in Narus Valley and other designated routes, looking for elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, antelopes and predators. Because the landscape is expansive, unhurried drives are often most rewarding.
Birdwatching and guided walks
Dry-country birds, raptors and dramatic terrain make Kidepo attractive to birders and walkers; nature walks must be arranged with authorised guides.
Karamoja cultural experiences
Community-led visits can introduce visitors to local traditions, architecture and livelihoods when approached with curiosity and respect.
When is the best time to visit?
December to March is generally a strong choice for wildlife viewing because animals may gather near reliable water sources. Kidepo’s rainfall pattern differs from that of southern Uganda, with a longer wet season often stretching from around April into October. Allow at least three nights in the park if possible, plus travel time.
Questions travelers often ask
Is Kidepo worth the long journey?
For travelers who value remote landscapes and quieter game viewing, the journey is often part of what makes Kidepo memorable.
Will I see a cheetah?
Cheetahs are possible but uncommon, so a sighting should be treated as a bonus rather than an expectation.
