About Mgahinga

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda’s smallest national park, at only about 34 square kilometres. It may also be its most scenic. The park lies in the far south-western corner of the country near the town of Kisoro, where Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo meet. It protects the Ugandan slopes of three extinct Virunga volcanoes: Muhabura (4,127 metres), Gahinga (3,474 metres) and Sabyinyo (3,669 metres).

Together with Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and Congo’s Virunga National Park, Mgahinga forms part of the wider Virunga Conservation Area, one of only two places on earth where mountain gorillas live.

The park’s motto, “where gold meets silver”, refers to its two primate highlights. Mgahinga is home to one habituated mountain gorilla family, the Nyakagezi group, led by silverbacks. It is also the only place in Uganda to track the endangered golden monkey, whose bright orange fur glows against the bamboo.

Gorilla treks here pass through bamboo forest and open volcanic slopes rather than dense jungle, and they often come with wide views across the Virunga chain. Beyond the primates, visitors can climb any of the three volcanoes. Sabyinyo’s summit sits at the meeting point of three countries, and Muhabura’s crater holds a small lake.

The Batwa Trail, led by the forest’s original inhabitants, explains their traditional hunting, gathering and spiritual life. Birding walks reveal Albertine Rift endemics such as the Rwenzori turaco.

Mgahinga is about 8 to 9 hours’ drive from Kampala, or a short flight to Kisoro airstrip. From Kigali, it is only about 3 to 4 hours via the Cyanika border. A Uganda gorilla permit here costs US$800 per person, the same as in Bwindi. Because there is only one gorilla family, permits are limited and should be booked early.

Mgahinga suits travellers who want a quieter gorilla experience, golden monkeys and mountain hiking all in one place. It combines naturally with Lake Mutanda, Lake Bunyonyi and the southern sectors of Bwindi.

Experiences worth making time for

Gorilla trekking

Rangers lead visitors into the forest on regulated treks. Terrain and walking time vary, so visitors should arrive prepared for a mountain environment.

Golden monkey tracking

A separate tracking experience focuses on the golden monkeys and can be combined with gorilla trekking over consecutive days.

Volcano hikes and cultural heritage

Guided climbs offer sweeping views, while responsibly organized Batwa cultural experiences share local forest history and knowledge.

When is the best time to visit?

June to September and December to February generally offer better conditions for trekking and hiking, although mountain showers can occur at any time.

Plan at least two activity days to enjoy both gorillas and golden monkeys, and add more time for a volcano climb.

Questions travelers often ask

Can I see gorillas and golden monkeys on one trip?

Yes. Many travelers schedule the two activities on separate days.

How is Mgahinga different from Bwindi?

Mgahinga combines gorilla tracking with golden monkeys and volcanic scenery, while Bwindi national park offers a larger rainforest and multiple gorilla trekking sectors.
