About Lake Mburo

Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo National Park covers about 370 square kilometres of rolling hills, acacia woodland, rocky ridges and wetlands in south-western Uganda. It is the smallest savannah park in the country and one of the easiest to reach, about 3.5 to 4 hours’ drive from Kampala, on the main route to Bwindi and Queen Elizabeth national park.

The park is built around Lake Mburo itself, one of a cluster of lakes linked by swamps and streams that keep the landscape green and attract wildlife throughout the year.

Lake Mburo is the best place in Uganda to see zebra and impala. It is also home to eland, topi, buffalo, warthog, waterbuck, bushbuck and Rothschild’s giraffe, which were reintroduced in 2015. Leopard and hyena are present, and hippos and crocodiles live in the lake. Elephants are absent and lions are rare, and that absence is what makes the park special.

Without large predators roaming the plains, Lake Mburo is one of the few places in Uganda where you can explore on foot, by bicycle or on horseback alongside grazing herds. Boat trips on the lake reveal hippos, crocodiles and excellent birdlife. More than 350 bird species have been recorded, including the African finfoot, the papyrus gonolek and the red-faced barbet. Night game drives offer a chance of leopard, bushbabies and other nocturnal animals.

Lake Mburo is usually visited for one or two nights, often to break the long drive between Kampala and the parks of the south-west. It suits families, active travellers and anyone who wants a relaxed, hands-on safari experience away from the vehicles. Visits to the long-horned Ankole cattle herders around the park add an insight into local pastoral life. Lodges range from comfortable tented camps to stylish hilltop lodges with wide views over the savannah.

Where is Lake Mburo National Park?

The park lies in western Uganda near the Kampala–Mbarara road and is commonly reached from Kampala in about three and a half to four and a half hours. It also makes a convenient overnight stop when traveling to or from the gorilla trekking areas of southwestern Uganda.

Experiences worth making time for

Guided walking safari

A walk with an authorised ranger brings you closer to tracks, plants and the smaller details of the ecosystem. Wildlife must always be observed at a safe distance.

Horseback safari

Selected authorised operators offer horseback excursions, a distinctive way to experience the savannah.

Game drives and boat trips

A morning drive can reveal grazing herds, while a boat trip provides opportunities to observe hippos and birds from the water.

When is the best time to visit?

June to August and December to February are often favourable for walking and game viewing, but Lake Mburo can be enjoyed all year. Greener months offer beautiful scenery and strong birding potential. One or two nights is enough for a satisfying visit, although an extra day allows a slower pace.

Questions travelers often ask

Can visitors walk near zebras?

Guided walking safaris can offer views of zebras, but rangers determine safe distances and routes.

Is Lake Mburo a good stop on the way to Bwindi?

Yes. Its location makes it a popular break on longer southwestern Uganda road journeys.
